It is designed to improve precision in long-range weather forecasting and surveillance using a parabolic dish antenna and a foam sandwich spherical radome.It is a specialized radar that uses the Doppler effect to produce velocity data about objects at a distance.The forecasts are expected to provide critical information to tourists and pilgrims before they plan visits to remote and vulnerable locations in the Himalayas.These indigenously built radars will play a vital role in providing information on the rapid development of severe weather events in the C entral and Eastern region of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh along with adjoining areas around with a nominal range of 100 Kms” as there are highly prone to cloud bursts, landslides, heavy rain and snowfall.Because of the smaller wavelength, the X band radar is more sensitive and can detect smaller particles.X-band Doppler radar s-They operate on a wavelength of 2.5-4 cm and a frequency of 8-12 GHz.The X-band Doppler radar s will cover the central and western Himalayas,these polarised radars will gather atmospheric variations and pick signals of extreme weather events.Developed By – The DWR has been designed and developed by ISRO and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru.The minister also launched the Multi-Mission Meteorological Data Receiving and Processing System of IMD in collaboration with ISRO (MMDRPS).The services of X-band Doppler radars were inaugurated at Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand and Kufri in Himachal Pradesh on the 146th foundation day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).In News -Recently, Union Minister for Earth Sciences commissioned two of the ten indigenously built Doppler weather radars which will closely monitor the weather changes over the Himalayas.
